Changing password manager is easy to do badly, because the export step creates a file with all your passwords readable. Here is how to move safely. This how-to is part of our password managers guide.
Before you start
Pick your new manager using our comparison, and set it up first with a strong master password and two-factor login. Choose a quiet time, on your own computer, and make sure it is up to date.
Step 1: Export your old vault
Find the export option, usually under settings or tools. Save the file somewhere local and obvious, such as a new folder on your desktop. Avoid folders that sync to the cloud, such as Dropbox, iCloud Drive or OneDrive.
Step 2: Import it into the new manager
Use the new manager's import tool and choose your old provider from the list. Then compare the item counts. Check for missing notes, attachments and shared items, which are not always moved.
Step 3: Delete the export file
Delete it, then empty your trash or recycle bin. If you put a copy on a USB stick, wipe that too.
Step 4: Check what matters
Log in to your most important accounts using the new manager:
- Email.
- Bank.
- Any account where the old manager held two-factor codes.
If your old manager stored authenticator codes, re-enrol them in the new one, or move them to a separate authenticator app. Make sure you still have your backup codes.
Step 5: Update everything else
- Install the new browser extension and remove the old one.
- Update your phone's autofill setting.
- Update any shared vaults and emergency contacts.
- Tell family members if you share logins.
Step 6: Close the old account
Keep the old vault for a few weeks in case something is missing. Then delete it and close the account. If you left because of a breach, also replace your important passwords.
